Cat6 vs Cat6A vs Fibre: Choosing the Right Cabling for Your Office

Your structured cabling is one of the longest-lasting investments in your IT infrastructure. Switches, laptops and access points will be replaced several times, but the cables inside your walls and ceilings are expected to perform for a decade or more. Choosing the right medium on day one saves expensive rework later.

Cat6 — the dependable all-rounder

Cat6 supports 1 Gbps comfortably up to 100 metres and 10 Gbps over shorter runs of around 55 metres. For most small and medium offices with standard desktop, phone and printer connections, Cat6 offers excellent value.

Cat6A — built for the next decade

Cat6A delivers 10 Gbps across the full 100-metre channel and has better shielding against interference. It is the preferred choice for Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 access points, PoE-powered cameras and any building that wants to be future-ready.

Fibre optic — speed and distance

For backbones between floors, buildings or server rooms, fibre is unbeatable. It carries far higher bandwidth over much longer distances, is immune to electrical interference and is ideal for industrial and multi-building sites.

Our recommendation

  • Cat6A for user outlets, access points and cameras
  • Multi-mode or single-mode fibre for backbones
  • Proper testing and certification for every link
  • Clear labelling and documentation for future changes
